What to Expect During a Gold Jewelry Evaluation
Whether you’re bringing in a broken bracelet, an unworn ring, or inherited jewelry, the process begins with understanding the items in front of you. A professional evaluation should explain what is being examined and why, and give you time to ask questions about purity, weight, and any offer. Use the checklist below to prepare.
Five Questions to Ask During Your Visit
Ask which tests are appropriate for your items, how purity is determined, how weight is measured, whether stones or nonmetal parts affect the assessment, and whether you can take time to consider the offer. Bring any documentation, but remember the physical item must be examined. GoldWiser does not quote purchase prices over the phone; an in-person evaluation provides a clearer basis for discussion.
Gold Jewelry Evaluation: Quick Checklist
- Bring the jewelry itself, including broken or mismatched pieces.
- Keep certificates and receipts with the relevant item.
- Ask how the buyer tests purity and weighs precious-metal content.
- Ask whether gemstones or other materials change the assessment.
- Review any offer and decide whether selling is right for you.

Bringing in gold jewelry for the first time can feel unfamiliar. You might have pieces you no longer wear, a broken bracelet, or jewelry passed down through your family. I’m Gina Olson, and I’ve spent over 15 years working with GoldWiser, helping customers throughout The Woodlands, Spring, Conroe, Tomball, and Greater Houston understand what they own and feel comfortable asking questions.
1. Start With a Conversation
When you arrive, you can explain what you’ve brought and what you’d like to learn. You don’t need to sort every piece perfectly or know its history before visiting. If an item has sentimental meaning, it’s fine to say so.
2. Look at the Jewelry and Its Markings
An evaluator may examine the style, condition, and any visible stamps or hallmarks. Common markings can offer clues about metal content, but a stamp alone doesn’t establish everything about an item. Older pieces and jewelry with worn markings may need a closer look.
3. Identify the Metal
Different pieces can contain different metals or components. Gold jewelry may include clasps, stones, and other materials that deserve individual attention. Depending on the item, an evaluator may use appropriate testing methods to help identify its metal content and explain the findings in everyday language.
4. Ask Questions Along the Way
You should feel welcome to ask what a marking means, why two pieces are examined differently, or whether an item needs additional inspection. The goal is clarity—not a technical lecture.
5. Decide What You Want to Do Next
An evaluation is also a chance to learn about your options and decide whether you’re ready to move forward. If you’d rather take time to think, that is a perfectly reasonable part of the process.
What Should You Bring?
Bring the pieces you’d like reviewed, including broken or mismatched jewelry if you have it. You can keep items together in a small pouch or box. If you have relevant paperwork, you’re welcome to bring it, but don’t assume you need original receipts to start a conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to clean my jewelry first?
No special preparation is necessary. Avoid harsh cleaners or home testing methods that could damage a piece.
Can I bring jewelry if I don’t know whether it’s real gold?
Yes. Identifying unfamiliar items is a common reason people seek a professional evaluation.
Can I ask about inherited or damaged jewelry?
Absolutely. Those items often come with questions, and it’s helpful to discuss them individually.
